Lucie stepped along the landing and, following instructions, opened a door at the end. A huge bathroom with a large window looked out over the garden and she could see glimpses of the sea in the distance. A large double walk-in shower with oversized marble tiles, a little step up to an egg-shaped standalone bath. She ran her finger along an exquisitely clean vanity and then gasped as she looked in the mirror. The fine drizzle and escapade with the drain had done nothing for her appearance. Her normally crowning-glory hair had fallen from the bun in places, there was grit in her cheek, a dirt mark on her temple and her bra, very much on the side of granny and grey, was poking out the side of the ripped t-shirt. She rolled her eyes and picked up a bottle of fancy soap. What was she even thinking? No doubt Underwear Model would turn up shortly and make her feel even worse about herself than she already did.

I possess the power to be in control of how I feel. She heard the app voice say in her head.

Sneaking open the vanity doors, she peered inside. Nothing really very interesting. None of Matilda’s products, in fact no girly stuff at all. She frowned: not even any children’s toiletries. She was clearly in some fancy guest bathroom. Of course she was. These Beautiful People had guest bathrooms and wings, she had vermin-ridden granny flats and life-size statues of the Three Wise Men.

Taking a towel from a stack of clean ones and letting her clothes drop to the floor, she stepped into the marble shower stall and pulled a matte black lever. Piping hot water gushed from a gigantic black square rain shower head. She sighed and then winced as the water touched the skin on her shoulder. Standing there easing her upper arm under the water, the blood began to wash away. Once the dirt and dried blood was gone, there was a fairly deep cut, plenty of angry looking scratches, welts, and the beginnings of a bruise, but overall it was fine.

She sighed to herself as she pushed the lever to turn off the shower, wrapped herself in the towel, and wound her hair back up into a bun on the top of her head. What was she even thinking, having a shower here? The shock had rendered her momentarily crazy. She’d go downstairs and make a speedy exit as soon as she could. She’d embarrassed herself enough for one day.

With the clean t-shirt over her leggings, she made her way back across the landing, down the wide stairs, and through the hallway to the kitchen. The house of course was lovely. Modern but classic at the same time. She spied two large linen Chesterfields as she went past the sitting room and large ginger jar lamps on side tables. Definitely no life-sized statues of things from a nativity play. Pushing the door to the kitchen, she was relieved not to see anyone else.
